Dr.j. Selvin Pitchaikani

I am Dr.J.Selvin Pitchaikani working as Oceanographer in the World Bank funded Integrated Coastal Zone Management Project for the West Bengal, India. I am having more than 12 years research experience in Hydro-biological studies, Marine pollution & EIA studies, , Coastal Zone Management, Water quality analyses and monitoring.

My Ph.D thesis entitled on "Hydro-biological fluctuations and fish productivity patterns in traditional fishing grounds off Tiruchendur coast, Gulf of Mannar, India". The study was carried out in three different traditional fishing grounds off Tiruchendur along the Gulf of Mannar, Southeast coast of India. Detailed information on environmental parameters such as physicochemical, nutrient dynamics, primary, secondary and tertiary productivity in the traditional fishing grounds was collected for the two years (January 2009 to December 2010) using standard oceanographic methods on board fishing vessels.


In addition to that, I am having working experience in the field of Physical Oceanography. I could lead the the deployment and retrieval of Tide Gauge (WTR & DWR Valeport make ), and Current Meter (ECM, RCM, RDCP) and data processing. I have done Hydrodynamic and Ecosystem models for Sundarbans by using MIKE 21 software. I have implemented the study on "Seawater quality in Digha Coastal waters, West Bengal.


I am having experience (about 6 years) in ICZM project, West Bengal (World Bank funded) and involved in Oceanographic studies related to West Bengal Coastal Area including Coastal Pollution studies, Water quality, Hydrodynamic studies related to Coastal Zone Management. In addition to that, I am involving in preparation of progress reports, Terms of Reference (TOR) for various projects, Capacity Building Plan preparation for Institute of Environmental Studies and Wetland Management, and evaluation of BID documents and technical reports etc related to ICZM- projects (West Bengal).

Experience in monitoring of various environmental project activities (Sewerage Treatment Plant at Digha), Mangrove and Bio-shield plantation activities, Renovation of Marine Aquarium at Digha etc (in association with Pilot Investment Executing Agencies) under the ICZM project, West Bengal.

Presently, I am involving in ICZM plan preparation related activities for (West Bengal).
