Root canal treatment is the process of removing diseased tissue inside a tooth, cleaning and shaping the cleaned-out space, and filling it with an inert material to ensure that the tooth remains strong and healthy. A root canal is done when all other options have failed in an effort to save the affected tooth from requiring extraction.

Root canal treatment is necessary when all or part of a tooth's pulp, the soft tissue inside the tooth, has been infected or injured. It may be caused by an infection, large filling that extends into the pulp chamber, or a cracked or broken tooth. The removal of the pulp allows caring for and preserving the remaining healthy root canal-treated tooth.
