Opening up the possibility of body hair transplant by FUE technique

Distinct advantages of newer technique

Hair transplantation has come a long way over the years, and today the awareness of the public about the operation is much more than a few decades ago. The demand for hair transplants is growing, and also the hair transplant process itself has advanced over the years. The traditional method of hair transplant, known as FUT or Follicular Unit Transplantation, relied on extracting a small strip of skin from the donor area. The strip is removed from regions such as the back or sides of the scalp along with the hair follicles for grafting into the target area suffering from baldness.

After removing the strip, the rest of the skin is pulled together and stitched close. This leaves a rather visible line shaped scar. This scar is easily hidden by the hair on the back or sides of the scalp. However, if the strip is removed from an exposed area, then it would leave a rather prominent scar.

The newer technique, known as FUE or Follicular Unit Extraction, uses a hollow needle shaped special equipment for extracting the hair follicles. In this technique, the hair follicles are extracted one by one using the needle. This needle is very small, about 0.6 mm in diameter, and hence the scars left by it are very small. These scars heal almost completely and are not visible to the naked eye. Hence, this technique allows the flexibility of extracting the hair follicles from exposed areas of the body, since there is no need to hide the scars. This allows the extraction of hair follicles from various body parts such as chest, arms and legs.

Implications for hair transplant

FUE is much less intrusive than FUT technique of hair transplantation. Hence, it takes much less time to heal. It is also a more suitable option for correction of previous hair transplant, since once a strip of skin is already removed, it is less feasible to keep removing more strips of skin. However, hair follicles can be extracted by the FUE method without any problems. It is ideal if the patient needs to just increase the density of hair at the front. It can also be useful if the density of hair at traditional donor sites on the scalp is too low to remove any follicles. In such case, hair extracted from other parts of the body may be used. When properly aligned during grafting, hair from other parts of the body can also produce a natural appearance.

Other possibilities

Since FUE technique is much less intrusive and leaves virtually no scars, it can be used to transplant hair to other areas of the body as well, such as the beard. Hair follicles from other parts of the body can be grafted into the beard region, or follicles from the beard region itself can be used as donor regions. It can be an effective tool for reshaping beard line and correct uneven beard growth.
